Weather Alert!!!1!!

As Christine and I were planning my birthday weekend, we went through several options.  The Blue Ridge Parkway is 70% closed for the winter and for repairs (we were very sad to find this out).  The circus was a little expensive (the elephant walk was Tuesday).  And now the neighborhood tour we decided on is taking a back seat to ...
WINTER BLAST 2010

Yep, that's what they're calling it.  The news had a field day.  The governor called for a state of emergency. Classes, stores and churches were giving notices of closure Saturday.  The gym closed early Friday night.  Folks even canceled dentist appointments for 11am Friday.  IT WAS SUNNY.  But hey, I got an unscheduled cleaning out of the deal.

Sorry folks, no bingo for you.  The news coverage was ridiculous.  They were in the grocery stores, standing by freeways, reminding people to stay off the roads, for God's sake, stay off the roads.  A brine solution was spread on the street, to what end you can determine later.  The best note, tho, was that folks were told to start shoveling after an accumulation of half an inch.  You wouldn't want to shovel 2 or 3 inches at at time.

This is the image from my window at 11pm.

Ooo, scary.  Ok, I know, it was early and people were nervous and most of the snow was happening in the mountains.  Let's see what happened the next day...
Notice the roads.  Niiiice.  There's more snow on the roads than there is on the grass (yeah, I know, the ground freezes faster and has higher conductivity and blah blah blah... still, they should've had a plow).

Walking to work, the scene didn't get better.  But it was very pretty.  Below is the dead center of Uptown Charlotte, the corner of Trade and Tryon Streets.

Eventually I did see a plow.  One plow.  I don't think the plows even really got started until 9am.

The day yesterday was pretty lousy weather, so I didn't do much exploring of the city.  But today is BEAUTIFUL, sunny and things are melting.  More pics of the upcoming adventures and my birthday dinner soon.  Sorry for the posting vacation everyone!

  1. I am HOWLING... rolling on floor, clutching my sides!!! Gotta admit, this area responds the same way to heavy rain... but.... really....they sprayed BRINE??? did they want to clear those roads, or pickle them? Run to your hardware store where you can stock up on batteries, fake logs, plastic sheeting and duct tape!"
