I grew up in my great-grandmother's (Henrietta Thurber) 3/4 pineapple post bed. I remember removing the pineapples and re-installing them constantly, covering it with stickers, sitting on the end-bar with all my weight and swinging my legs (that didn't go so well on mom's bed... sorry mom). Being the nostalgic packrat than I am, I kept it all these years with the hopes of restoring it to its former pre-Jen glory. The pineapples are stripped loose and the varnish is marbling and the laminate mahogany is peeling away. I reglued the laminate, but that's all for now. Instead I took the first steps to putting it back into actual USE: I built a boxspring.
Because hey, why pay $200 for a specialty size boxspring when you can make one for less than $50?
Just a quick word of warning to those thinking this is a good plan... The thing is HEAVY. It must weigh at least 70 pounds. I had to build the top half in place. (Shows how much framing lumber is cheaper than nice, light lumber.) But it's STRONG, it FITS, and it's regulation height, which is what I wanted. The mattress arrives today, so Biggest Loser Marathon, here I come!
Just don't go back to childhood and start bouncing... goes I guarantee you, it's gonna hurt! You've got much more box than spring!
ReplyDeletewow - go you!
ReplyDeletegonna have time to work on a mahogany-veneered bed for us, too? :D
