So getting back to my July 4 weekend, after spending time with the Amish, we did a few other things, including:
Saw lots of awesome old cars (Jeff knows an absurd amount about old cars) and won $8.25 playing a single game of bingo at the Freedom Festival at Memorial Park!
Took the dog to the lake, where Jeff was ready and willing to help a pretty fisherwoman in distress!
Taught Jeff's mom to Blog! Welcome, Marie!
And finally, after all that fun, we went to the 155th Annual Big Butler Fair!
There were bunnies...
And chickens...
And food competitions....
Not to mention first prize bales of hay...!!
We saw chainsaw exhibitions...
Even the "Dock Dogs" dog jumping competition!
The whole thing was incredibly quaint... Between advertising various forms of farm equipment, to the animal judging, to the little girls showing off their lambs and associated wool outfits in 90-degree weather, I felt like I was in a real old-timey fair. And of course, you can't go to a country fair, without a country hat. ;)
After a long, hot day of walking around, the crowning moment of the day was, quite obviously, the SCHOOL BUS DEMOLITION DERBY.
Here's the game: As a school bus, all your important parts are on the front end. The engine, the battery, the radiator... most of the rest beef for the roasting. So the buses all line up back to back and ram into each other repeatedly. In the beginning, it's primarily one on one. Slowly, though, someone starts getting an angle going, and it becomes a crazy cluster of chaos! It was redneck-awesome. Just when you think somebody's out, the driver manages to get their bus started and the crowd roars in approval!! Photos don't nearly do it justice, so here's a video.
The aftermath was something. In the end "Bob Saget" seems to be the last bus standing, but we didn't really care. :)
After the derby, we enjoyed the draft horses and fireworks. It's really something to see....And of course, more pictures are here.
Can't wait until next year!!
Looks like a good time was had by all! (great pic. of you and Jeff, btw) - but I've never really thought of my home area as "quaint'... that might take some getting used to!
ReplyDeleteJust enjoyed the rest of the pictures... to chime in on the authenticity of the school house... at least the door is recent. Very recent. Original was probably upright planks with cross-wise support holding them together... possibly even forming a Z. The rest... can't make a good guess from the photo, but those vines have been aroung for a while, so it wasn't done last year!
